Androstephium

(Greek-made name, referring to the corona). .l/ilidcew. Small genus of S. W. United States, with funnel-shaped, spreading-limbed, 6-lobed perianth, 6 stamens, and 3-angled ovary, and a corona or crown at the mouth: lvs. linear, radical: scape simple, leafless. Plant in a sunny place in sandy soil, placing the bulbs 4-6 ft. deep ; protect in winter. Prop. by division of the bulbs and by seeds. vlolaceum, Torr. Slender, 6-10 in.: fl. blue, 1 in. long, 3-6 in loose umbel. Blooms in spring ; pretty.
