St. villous, glandular, 1-3 ft. high : lvs. woolly beneath ; lower lvs. hastate, obtuse, 3-8 in. long, coarse ; bracts crowded, conspicuous : fls. 1-1% in. long, red or crimson-purple, in dense, showy glomes or ciusters.—Prized for bees.
